One of our 5 Ideas: We envision a space of equal unexpected phenomena where
each idea stands on its own as an emotionally charged sculpture. More than a simple enclosure, the surrounding
architecture complements the collection by becoming one with it. We propose an all-white space
simultaneously squeezed from the outside and expanding from within – a space apparently collapsing in on
itself from the pressure of the city but also bolstered against the stress by fluid structural lines emphasized
by plastic pulling back on the chaos, the Prosthetic Prostration.
We want to capture what it feels like to be inside a stark-white stressed plastic bag. The resultant spatial
experiment charges the relationship between Nicola's creations and their consumers by experientially
shrinking the shopper to the size of a shopping bag while allowing the objects of their consumptive desire to
oscillate across scales from that of the jewel to that of the galaxy. The transcendental environment is defined
by a fluid architecture of structurally tensile lines shrink-wrapped in a textile bubble of space-time ambiguity.
We were originally motivated by two very different explorations: the experimental and the practical. On one
hand, we invoked BMW's GINA project, which questions material function in terms of how we conceive the
automotive skin (we want to conceal function unless and until it's functioning). On the other hand, we were
inspired by the elegant lines created by the utilitarian process of sheathing boats against the elements (we
wonder what the space is like between the streamlined boat and its inadvertently figural shell).
We propose a clean, all-white space selectively accentuated by integral structure underneath. However, over
time we imagine that the space will become part of the city as individuals leave impressions with pacing feet
and passing bodies. Over the course of the two weeks, the space's previous rawness will be restored as life
tramps the future to reinstate the past.
