Private Residence

Atlanta, GA

June. 2008

This private residence was constructed as the new beacon of light in an aspiring neighborhood. The architect wanted the house to “float” above the existing structures. Expressing an image of architecture in movement, the home draws a parallel to the fast-paced life many individuals lead today. The interior is left to a light, open liberation, in contrast to the pulling of the exterior. Individuals reflect on themselves and the nature of their surroundings.

A narrow lot in an established community is always a challenge for an architect, but the 20ft-wide lot allowed for reinvestigation of narrow living and its latent possibilities. The architect derived the design idea from an impression created by popular 1940’s shotgun houses built on adjacent lots. This house revisits that idea in a new light with openness while bringing the ideal southern porch to new heights.
